I've been doing yoga since 1994 studying with Florence Schneider and Marilynn (Mamata) Quam locally and Christopher Baxter of Atma Yoga receiving a 200 hour certificate to teach beginning yoga.
Atma Yoga is characterized by steadiness and comfort and comes from the word atman which means the soul within. The idea is to practice the poses supported by yogic breathing to unite your body, mind and spirit in harmony. Mastering the asanas(postures) helps to calm your mind and reduce your monkey mind: that constant mind "chatter" that keeps you "scattered."
My class is for beginners with basic poses but I do extend the poses into intermediate yoga sometimes. Eclectic describes my class, Atma, Iyengar, occasionally poses from other genres. Rare, but we may do a belly dance movement or a Tai Chi move.
Off the mat, I'm in American Association of University Women, League of Women Voters, Women's Network of the Red River Valley, past president of Friends of the Library, and on the board of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition and active in politics. I teach yoga at my church, enjoy reading, lots of travel, belly dance and lake activities. My background is nursing and a Master of Liberal Arts from MSUM. I used to own Food for Thought Alternative Book Store and came to yoga through books. First the word/idea morphing into action (Hatha Yoga) then relaxation, flexibility and improved posture.
